Why should Christians believe in seven day creation?
This article is addressed to those who are saved, yet do not believe in seven day creation. This is not an issue of salvation, but of credibility and belief in the truth of the Bible.
We as the Church are undermining the Bible’s validity by bending its historic record of Creation in order to agree with scientific theories. The Bible is not compatible with millions of years and it is not compatible with evolution. When we try to tie the Bible to these theories we only tie a noose around the neck of the church. Educated people can see where the belief of these theories falsifies the Bible. When they are told, "Jesus loves you. The Bible tells you so," they say, "Why should we believe what the Bible says? Even you Christians don’t believe it!" And they’re right! If we don’t stand up and say that the Bible is true from the first word, then we can’t expect them to believe Matthew, Mark, Luke and John any more than we believe Genesis. If Genesis is up to interpretation, then so are the Gospels, and so is Jesus’ resurrection. Perhaps that too is figurative?
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1), an undisputed fact among Christians. Why then do so many Christians dispute God’s method, which he has shown us through Moses? He couldn’t have said it in a simpler way, "And there was evening and there was morning - the first day." And so on up until the seventh day when He rested. It is clear that God is speaking literally to us, so why are we looking for another explanation? Christians are allowing fallible human science to cause us to reinterpret the infallible word of God.
If you read the Bible it speaks of six days of creation, rather than the millions of years scientists lead us to believe is necessary. With each act of creation God spoke what he wanted to create "and it was so." As soon as he spoke, it was there; an instant perfect creation. We know that God made both man and animals from dust (Genesis 2:7, 19). We know that woman was made from man’s rib (Genesis 2:21-22).
God told us how he formed creation; we know God doesn’t lie, so why do we seek an alternate explanation? We know that all of this is given in scripture, and we know that scripture comes from God, so why do some of us doubt it? David believed (Psalms 103: 14), and Jesus believed (Matthew 19: 4-5), so why don’t we?
Some Christians ask, "Why is this important? As long as we believe in Jesus, and as long as we believe God created the universe, why is it wrong for us to conform to the beliefs of science?" It matters because it undermines the Bible and the entire Christian faith. By saying that we believe that the world is millions of years old or that God must have used evolution to create, we are saying that the Bible is false and that it is a lie. Not only does this damage the faith of present believers, but it prevents many from ever taking Christ seriously. When unbelievers see the church conforming to the world, accepting the belief that God’s version of creation is incorrect, they judge, fairly, that if we accept that one part is false, then all must be false.
We were told, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12: 2) It is the Church’s duty to read what the Bible teaches us, to acknowledge it as truth, and to do so publicly. We have been trusted with the truth and we must speak it!
We should understand that the truth is never accepted easily, and there will be great consequences to our speaking it. We will be persecuted. We will be mocked, ridiculed and abused. We will lose respect, jobs, church privileges, and even friends. They could take away our church building, they can and will do a great many things. Despite all this we will speak the truth.
Jesus warned us of, and blessed us for, the persecution that we will face because of him: "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you" (Matthew 5:11-12). The church has been quiet and complacent for far too long. Now is the time to fearlessly proclaim the truth from the rooftops! We will rejoice in the persecution we face, for it is when the Church is persecuted that it truly becomes strong and grows!
